Made in Staffordshire County England by Josiah Wedgewood & Sons circa 1880
Commissioned by Richard Briggs of Boston to commemorate Longfellow's work.  It is intended for display purposes only. He presented one of the pitchers to Longfellow at Christmastime 1880 and received the poet's thanks in a letter dated December 30, 1880.
This transfer-printed pitcher features a bust of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in an oval frame on one side, with the text from Longfellow's poem "Keramos" on the reverse.  Decorative features include floral borders, stars and gilding.
Measures 8 3/4" across including spout and handle, 6 1/2" high, 6 1/2" wide, 4 3/4" base.
Inscribed Excelsior/Hiawatha/Evangeline/ Miles Standish/Olden Legend/Tales of a Wayside Inn/Psalm of the Keramos Round.
This Wedgewood pitcher design is on display at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Peabody Essex Museum-American Decorative Arts Exhibition, Maine Historical Society, Bowdoin College Museum of Art-Artstor Collection, Maine.  It has been  exhibited at Harvard University. Owned by the Portland Museum of Art, Maine & The Brooklyn Museum, NY.
Condition: Clean, has never been used as a pitcher. Decorative only. Please see last 2 photos for pin dot imperfections near the spout.  Some spots in the photos are from the manufacturing/painting process; they are not on the surface.
